Joseph Hunter has resigned as superintendent of our school district. You can read about the details of his settlement here: http://www.polkio.com/DIONews0.shtml

  1. This is good news and bad news. Good that we are finally rid of the guy and bad that we had to spend even one penny on him. Tragic that he gets to take the district to the cleaners.

  2. I wonder whether this announcement will sway any still-undecided voters on Ms. Stoops' recall ...

  3. It is the board's fault that the situation reached this level of crisis and Susan Stoops bears more responsiblity than anyone else. How could they possible believe there was no cause to fire him outright? I think as more becomes publicly known over the coming weeks the board will have even more to answer for.

  4. Next month's board meeting should be interesting (and hopefully will become more so). Feels like the moment merits John Dylan's "Time are a-changin'".

A blessed day indeed. And I don't think we've heard the last of Hunter. His culpability shall rise to the surface in the coming months even if he did get bought out.

  5. A big shout-out to Luis. He expressed my feelings exactly.

  6. What happens now to all the complaints and lawsuits? Do they go away with him? How many staff members and/or days will this buy out cost the district? So happy he's gone but, I too, am so sad he's taking so much money with him.

  7. Each day school is cancelled saves roughly $70000. 4 furlough days equals $280000. Whether or not teachers will now vote to give up days remains to be seen but many have mixed feelings about our current situation. Happy that Hunter is gone but not wanting to pay for his negotiated contract settlement.

  8. One of the egregious points about the whole Hunter situation was his turning his vacation days to cash even as the administrators were struggling with cuts and lay offs and teachers were giving up days. He had not clue one about leading by example or shared ownership of our job of educating children. The circumstances of his departure only serve to underline and boldface all previous criticisms of his regard for the staff and students of this school district.

  9. Since when does someone who "resigns" get any severance package? If I told my employer "I quit" why would I think I could then ask for (and receive) half my salary for the next two years?

Call it what it is: he was terminated, and they settled.
