Democracy? Not Here!

Believe it or not, the district has refused to release the names of the people who have applied to fill the vacant Board position prior to next Monday's meeting. Even though they will be appointed by the Board, they are supposed to represent the public. So why doesn't the public even have the right to know who they are? Because the Board members have not requested that information in advance. So we have no right to know it either. The commitment to basic democratic principles in our school district is almost nonexistent. We not only need a new superintendent, we need a new School Board, and we need a new set of rules. Democratic ones this time!

  2. You surely know that the majority of our government, locally and nationally, is not a true democracy. It is predominately representative democracy. As a result, we, by democratic election, select an individual to represent us and in return we willingly relinquish our vote. We have no vote in replacing the board member. Thus, I am unsure why you are calling foul based on a lack of democracy...

  3. Isn't this about choosing who will represent the public? We have no right to know who wants to represent us until after they have been selected? What if we would like to let our elected representatives, who will be making the selection, know what we think about the various candidates? In which version of democratic process are knowledge and information monopolized? Answer? None - that's a different kind of political system.

  4. The Board meeting information for 1 Nov indicates there were five letters of interest submitted for the vacancy; four from within zone 1, and one from without. Names are not provided. Given all our community and district struggles right now, this seems to be a GREAT turnout of people interested in jumping in!
